CREEPING CRISES

Creeping crises evolve slowly, they have precursor events ('warnings'), they are complex and they are insufficiently addressed by societal policies and actions. They are bubbling under the societal event horizon until they, occasionally, turn into open crises.

Work Package 1 (WP1) elaborates the concept of creeping crisis in the domain of food systems. It aims at exploring origins, drivers and dynamics of creeping crises in food systems with a focus on their non-linearity and complex processes to uncover mechanisms of creeping crises in food systems and to identify potential preventive measures. Specific objectives are:

• Review relevant literature to expose the origins, drivers, mechanisms and foreshadowing events of creeping crises;

• Develop conceptual maps to highlight the evolution and escalation of creeping crises;

• Outline potential measures to prevent the escalation of creeping crises into open crises;

• Unravel the complexity and non-linearity of creeping crises in food systems.
